(We are hoping to collect most of the items from out of town ie. Anchorage and Wasilla as the good folks of Talkeetna have already given alot. Weve got lots of ideas but we need people to make the calls.
Charlie's report on fundraising
- Reached $80,000 mark (not including 25,000matching grant). Fundraising going well, but we are not there yet! After matching grant is figured in we will still have another 25,000 to raise.
-Very Important - anyone who has not contacted their businesses now is the time to let them know that until April 30th there donation will be matched dollar for dollar by the Rasmussen Foundation. This is a great opportunity for fund raising.
Anita - materials
-Lowe's will make a material donation and may be able to send up a group of volunteers for the build
-Super deck may be able to donate the needed stains for playground. Moore's will be carrying their products and we will work through Moore's to get the stains.
-May be able to get high school shop class to build all the needed saw horses for the build.
Organization Day
Thanks once again to Jim Kloss for letting us use Whole Wheat Radio all day for out meetings. Our project build manager from Leathers was very impressed with our progress in all areas. He is looking forward to returning in June to help us build. The more voluteers we have at the build the more creative our playground will be. We had a great turn out for the captain and steering committee slide show at the end of the day. Thanks to all who participated! We are still in need of some committed people to be captains during the build. You dont have to be a carpenter. You do need to be able to commit to being at the build site for the 5 days of the build starting everyday at 7:00am. Let Karey know if you are interested.
Thank you to Karey, Charlie and Laura for going down to Palmer to meet with Linda Brenner and Dave Higher from the Borough.
-Trip went well, they are impressed with our organization.
-They will need a more detailed sight plan and flood plain permit, both of which Anita & Brian are working on
-Time line will work out so that we will be able to be on the sight May 1st to begin getting ready for building, a bit later than hoped but definitely doable.
-We can use borough gravel, but may not deposit overburden in borough gravel pit
-The borough will be able to provide insurance for the build (this is great news!) and liability insurance once it is completed.
Karey will set up site meeting with volunteers who will be involved in getting site ready. Tammy Hamler has generously agreed to be the site captain (site prepeation in regards to dirtwork). Sharon Montagnino will be the co site captain in charge of getting all the tents and everything that is needed for the build assembled and ready on the property. (including electric, phone, potties etc.). Big thanks to both of them!!!! There will be a lot of work the weekends leading up to the build and there will be tons to do to set up for the build. No heavy equipment can be on the site during the build - this must all be done before.
Christian Center has donated their space for childcare during the 1st four days of building. However we still need space for the last day - Sunday. Any ideas or suggestions out there?
The playground has ended up sitting closer to the railroad side than previously thought; therefore some slight design changes have taken place in order to provide a perimeter fence around that area. It was decided that we will continue the Leather's perimeter fence all along this spot for safety. Since more fence is needed it was also decided that the rail of the fence (both top and bottom) would be made of treated wood rather than composite because it is more cost affective and will prevent us from having to raise $10,000 more to cover the costs.
Picket sales
Please let family and friends know that the last date to buy an engraved picket will be March 31st they can go to www.talkeetnaplayground.org to buy one and can pay by credit card. Or print form and mail in a check. All committee members should print out some forms and carry them around in your cars ask people if they would like to buy a picket! This date may be extended we are discuss selling pickets at the build and have them added to the fence at a later date - stay tuned.
Looking for groups and organizations to send volunteer to the build such as the VFW, local churches, job corp. clinic, Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge - any others? If you have ideas contact Diane Ziegner 733-3210
Looking into the possibility of a T-Shirt fundraiser to have for sale at the build.
Again, the next meeting will be Monday March 24th. 6:30pm Talkeetna Roadhouse. We need your help, hope to see you there!
CALL TO ACTION: PLEASE READ BELOW INFORMATION.
We have applied for a grant for $3,800 from Hamburger Helper for materials and supplies for the playground. It appears that the extent of community support for the project is very important to them, and they provide an opportunity on their website for project supporters to post comments. We are a smaller community than many, so it would be extremely helpful to our chances for receiving this grant if everyone on this list could go to the link below and enter a quick comment about why the playground is important to you or to the community. Particularly since some other funding appeals haven't had the impact we had hoped, this small grant and others like it are critical for the tail end of our fundraising effort.
